WARSAW, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Hosts Poland got off to a disappointing start in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, losing 2-0 to Colombia in the opening game at the Stadion Mosir in Lodz on Thursday.
An impressive performance by Ivan Angulo, a 20-year-old striker from San Andres de Tumaco, saw him hammer home a goal in the 23rd minute.
Colombia upped the tempo in the second half and sealed the victory with a cracking goal from Luis Sandoval.
Over 17,463 fans watched the game, which heralded the start of the 24-team tournament.
Elsewhere, Senegal thrashed Tahiti 3-0 in Group A, whilst Italy celebrated a Group B victory with a 2-0 win over Mexico.
In the other Group B match, Japan and Ecuador drew 1-1.
On Friday, Honduras play New Zealand and Uruguay take on Norway in Group C. In Group D, Qatar face Nigeria, whilst the United States play Ukraine.
The contest is held every two years and runs till June 15th.
