CAIRO, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit discussed here on Monday with the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Aqilah Saleh about the latest political and security developments in Libya.
"The mutual talks tackled ways to put an end to the Libyan crisis through democratic transition process," Mahmoud Afifi, spokesman of the AL chief, said in a statement.
"Dialogue among Libyan factions is the only way to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis," the spokesman added.
Abul Gheit stressed the AL's efforts to preserve Libya's territorial integrity and its national unity.
Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
The country is politically divided into western and eastern governments.
The the eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has launched a military campaign on Thursday to take over western Libya, particularly Tripoli where the UN-backed government is based.
The operation left so far 21 killed and 27 wounded, according to Libya's Ministry of Health.
