JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Police in the eastern Nangarhar province have seized more than 1.6 tons of illicit drugs over the past one week, a senior police officer Ghulam Sanai Stanikzai said on Tuesday.
"Police have discovered and seized 1,662 kg of illicit drugs ranging from hashish to heroin during raids and search operations elsewhere in the province," Stanikzai told reporters here.
A total of 33 people have also been arrested from across the troubled province on charge of involvement in drug trafficking, robbery and subversive activities, the official said.
Two suicide vests have also been discovered and two suspected terrorists have been arrested over the period, the official added.
Afghanistan in 2018 produced about 6,400 tons of opium poppy against 9,000 tons in 2017, according to Afghan officials.
The decrease in poppy production can be attributed to government's harsh policies against drug, reduction in poppy cultivation, poppy fields destruction by security forces and a severe drought which hit northern and western parts of the country, officials said.
