JAKARTA, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Karangetan volcano in Indonesia's North Sulawesi province spewed hot lava and rocks, forcing authorities to evacuate people living in the slope of the mountain, an official from the disaster agency said Monday.
The hot lava and rocks had almost reached villages and roads in Siau Barat sub-district of Kepulauan Sitaro district, spokesman of the national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
At least 22 people had fled their homes and taken shelters at the homes of their relatives, said Sutopo.
"Besides, evacuation for those living near the Merebuhe and Batuare rivers is underway, and the people are told to be alert, particularly during the night time," Sutopo told Xinhua in a text message.
So far there were no reports of damages or casualties caused by the eruption, he said.
Karangetan volcano is among the 129 active ones in Indonesia.
