NEW DELHI, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed and 10 injured after their vehicle fell into a gorge in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, police said Friday.
The accident occurred at Mukhed in the state's Nanded district.
"The vehicle carrying 15 people skidded off the road and fell into the gorge after its driver lost control of the vehicle while crossing a bridge Thursday evening," a police official said.
While five people died on the spot, the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital where the condition of two are said to be serious, he added.
A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.
India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
