ROME, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of people gathered here under a blazing sun on Sunday to participate in Italy's fourth Disability Pride parade, calling for more integration of people with disability into the society.
During the parade through Rome's historical center, the organizers demanded the actual implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), signed by Italy in the early 2007.
The CRPD asks every partys to promote and protect the enjoyment of human rights by people with disabilities and grant them equality under the law.
Attending the event as "surprise guest", former president of Italy's Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini was satisfied with the massive participation, despite the heat and the World Cup final.
"Their (people with disabilities) struggle cannot be ignored, and they have to be granted with the same possibilities that non-disabled people enjoy," Boldrini told Xinhua.
The event was organized by Disability Pride Italy with the support of several civil society associations and the sponsorship of some official institutions, including the European Parliament and the City of Rome.
