LONDON, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Harry Kane set a calendar year Premier League record as he scored a hat-trick when Tottenham Hotspur eased past Southampton 5-2 at Wembley on Tuesday.
The league's leading scorer made it 39 on the Premier League scoring standings, surpassing Alan Shearer's record of 36 in 1995.
His two close-range strikes in the 22nd and 39th minutes gave Spurs a 2-0 first-half lead.
Dele Alli put Spurs three-up in 49 minutes with a low, curling shot, before Son Heung-min fired in to make it 4-0 two minutes later.
Sofiane Boufal grabbed a goal back with a fierce shot before Kane scored his third goal of the game.
Dusan Tadic came on to score a second for Southampton.
