JAKARTA, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian island of Nias in North Sumatra province is scheduled to host The Nias Pro 2018 World Surf League Qualifying Series on August 24-28 with 150 surfers from the same number of countries and regions expected to take part in the event.
The upcoming surfing competition in Nias will be a part of the World Surf League Championship Tour, and follows the success of the previous Krui Pro and Bali Pro qualifying rounds held in Indonesia's Lampung and Bali provinces respectively, the organizing committee said in its statement released on Thursday.
The competition event for the international professional surfers would be held in Sorake Beach, best known for its particularly challenging waves for surfers called 7-barreled waves.
Nias island has long been known by international surfers for its challenging waves and other related water sports and recreational activities.
The exotic island is the most prominent one among the small islands in the province, and can be reached via a 55-minute flight from Kualanamu airport near the North Sumatran capital of Medan.
