YANGON, May 15 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and three others were injured due to a jade mining riot in Phakant, Myanmar's northernmost Kachin state at the weekend, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Tuesday.
It happened that employees of the Yadana Shwe Ate jade mining company torched and destroyed the company's office building and some living quarters after the employer and the employees failed to resolve the wage rate.
A backhoe and six 2,400-gallon oil storage tanks, some machines and two tons of raw jade and other materials were also destroyed by the employees, the report said, adding that 49 of them involved in the incident have been detained by the police.
On Sunday afternoon, the company employees demanded the termination of the mining operation in two days and overtime payment from the employer.
Following the breakdown of the negotiation, about 1,000 employees out of 2,500 staged demonstration and threw rocks and burned the office building and living quarters.
The local police fired warning shots to disperse the demonstrators and put out the fire by using 10 fire engines.
